Healing After the Baby: Beyond the 6-Week Check

You were told everything looks fine and cleared for activity. And yet you do not feel fine. Real postpartum recovery takes far longer than six weeks, especially for the nervous system.

A mother cradling her baby close in a warm, restful home setting

You had the baby. You went to your 6-week appointment. You were told everything looks fine and cleared for activity. And yet you do not feel fine. You are still exhausted in a way that runs deeper than sleep deprivation. Your emotions feel unpredictable. Your body feels like it belongs to someone else. You wonder why no one warned you about this part. You are not broken. You are not behind. You are navigating a reality that our healthcare system rarely addresses: postpartum healing takes far longer than six weeks, especially for the nervous system.

What the 6-Week Check Does and Does Not Measure

The standard postpartum appointment assesses physical recovery: uterine involution, wound healing if applicable, blood pressure, and a brief emotional screening. These things matter. But they represent a fraction of what has happened to your body. What is not assessed: how your spine and pelvis have recovered from the structural demands of pregnancy and birth. Whether your nervous system is regulated or still locked in sympathetic overdrive. Whether your vagus nerve has recovered its function. Whether your body has processed the neurological and emotional intensity of birth, however that birth went.

The Neurological Reality of Postpartum

Birth is not just a physical event. It is a neurological one. The autonomic nervous system is profoundly activated during labor and delivery. Stress hormones surge, then crash. The brain begins a process of rewiring itself for the demands of motherhood. The vagus nerve and the entire parasympathetic system are called upon simultaneously for birth, for bonding, and for initiating the recovery that needs to follow.

Then, before any of that recovery can begin, the demands of new parenthood arrive: fragmented sleep, continuous physical caregiving, the emotional intensity of caring for a new life, and the pressure to appear functional and recovered. The nervous system, which needed time and support to complete its own process, instead pivots directly into a new sustained demand. The result is a nervous system that may remain in heightened activation for months or years after delivery.

Signs Your Nervous System Is Still in Recovery

Difficulty sleeping even when the baby sleeps. Waking tense and braced before the day begins. Heightened startle response. Persistent pain in the neck, jaw, pelvis, or lower back. Emotional swings that feel unpredictable or disproportionate. A sense of emotional numbness or disconnection from joy. Feeling wired but exhausted simultaneously. Digestive irregularity. A sense that you have not fully returned to yourself, even a year or more after birth.

How Postpartum Chiropractic Care Helps

Chiropractic care in the postpartum period addresses both the structural recovery of the pelvis and spine and the neurological restoration of the nervous system. The pelvic and lumbar regions, which bear the greatest structural demand during pregnancy and delivery, are also central to the nerve pathways that govern reproductive function, digestion, and lower limb movement. Gentle adjustments also directly support vagal tone, improving capacity for rest, for bonding, for emotional regulation, and for the kind of sleep that actually restores you.

Dr. Christine sees postpartum women at any point in their recovery: weeks, months, or years after delivery. Your body’s capacity to heal is present whenever you give it the support it needs.

Your body is not on a deadline. Postpartum healing does not end at 6 weeks. It continues for as long as it needs to, and it does better with support.
