When most people hear the word chiropractic, they picture adults getting their backs adjusted. The idea of a baby seeing a chiropractor often raises immediate questions: is it safe? What could a newborn possibly need an adjustment for? These are fair questions, and once understood, the answers often change how parents approach their infant’s health and development.
Dr. Christine Lebiecki is ICPA-certified in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic and has supported infants and children in Colchester and Burlington, Vermont for over 20 years. Care for babies looks nothing like care for adults, and it is one of the gentlest, most supportive interventions available in the early months of life.
What Birth Does to a Baby’s Body
Even in uncomplicated births, the forces involved in moving through the birth canal place significant compressive and rotational force on the infant’s head, neck, and upper spine. In births involving instruments or cesarean delivery, the forces are different but can be equally significant. These experiences can create subtle tension patterns in the upper cervical spine, cranium, and surrounding fascia that the baby cannot self-resolve. These patterns can affect comfort, function, and nervous system regulation from the very first days of life.
Feeding and Latch
The upper cervical spine has a direct relationship with the nerves governing sucking, swallowing, and head rotation. When there is tension here, babies may struggle to latch on one side, tire quickly during feeding, or be difficult to position. Gentle upper cervical adjustments can produce immediate and meaningful improvements in feeding ability.
Digestion and Colic
The vagus nerve runs from the brainstem through the neck and into the organs, governing gut motility and the parasympathetic response. When upper cervical tension impairs vagal tone, digestion is affected. Babies who seem to be in constant digestive distress often show remarkable improvement after gentle adjustments that restore vagal tone and reduce nervous system stress.
Sleep
A regulated nervous system is a prerequisite for restful sleep at any age. When a baby’s system is heightened due to birth-related tension, transitioning into deep, restorative sleep cycles is difficult. Chiropractic care that supports nervous system regulation often has a significant positive effect on infant sleep.
What a Baby Adjustment Looks Like
There is no twisting, no cracking, and no pressure of any kind that would be uncomfortable for a small body. Adjustments for infants involve fingertip-level pressure, comparable to what you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Most babies relax deeply during their adjustments. Many fall asleep. Some pass gas or have a bowel movement shortly after, a sign that the nervous system’s digestive regulation is beginning to work more effectively.
You don’t have to wait for something to be wrong to support your baby’s health. The nervous system is developing right now. This is when support matters most.
