The Real Value of Health: A Colchester Chiropractor's Take

Most people do not buy health. They buy their way out of crisis, and that is the most expensive version there is.

By Dr. Christine Lebiecki, D.C. · December 1, 2021

A peaceful, restorative setting

You will change the oil in your car at five thousand miles without thinking twice. You will replace the brake pads before they grind. You do this because you understand something about that car: small maintenance is cheap, and catastrophic failure is not.

Then you get in that car and drive a body you have not maintained in eleven years.

I am not saying this to make you feel badly. I am saying it because almost every person who walks into Family First Chiropractic in Colchester, Vermont arrives at the same moment in the same story. Something finally broke. And when I ask how long it had been building, the answer is almost never "last Tuesday." It is months. Sometimes years.

Crisis Care Is the Most Expensive Health Care You Will Ever Buy

Here is the math nobody does out loud.

Proactive care is a known, small, predictable cost. You budget for it the way you budget for anything else you maintain.

Crisis care is none of those things. It is the emergency visit, the imaging, the weeks you cannot lift your child, the work you push to next month, the sleep you lose, the ripple through everyone who depends on you. It costs money, and then it costs time, and then it costs the part of your life that was happening while you were sidelined.

Crisis never sends an invoice in advance. So we behave as though it is free until it is not.

What "Feeling Fine" Actually Hides

This is the part I want you to sit with, because it is where most people get caught.

Feeling fine is not the same as functioning well. Your nervous system is extraordinarily good at adapting. When one area stops moving the way it should, your body compensates: it recruits other muscles, shifts how you carry weight, changes how you breathe. It does this silently and it does it well, sometimes for years.

What you experience during those years is nothing. No pain. No signal. Just a slow narrowing of what your body can absorb without complaint.

Then you pick up a laundry basket and something gives out, and it feels sudden. It was not sudden. It was the last small thing on top of a very long accumulation.

Normal labs do not rule this out. Labs measure chemistry. They do not measure whether your system has been running in survival mode for two years, or whether your body still knows how to downshift into rest and repair.

Your body does not wait until you are in pain to start compensating. It starts on day one. Pain is simply the day it runs out of room.

Why We Accept Maintenance for Machines and Not for Ourselves

I have thought about this for a long time and I think the honest answer is that a car has a dashboard.

Your body has one too. It is just quieter, and we have been taught to override it. The tension in your jaw. The fatigue that sleep does not touch. The headaches with no clear cause. The fuse that is shorter than it used to be. Those are dashboard lights. We call them stress and keep driving.

Proactive care is what it looks like to take those signals seriously before they become a diagnosis. Not because something is wrong, but because something is being asked of your system every single day, and systems under sustained load need support.

What This Does and Does Not Do

I want to be straightforward with you. Chiropractic care does not cure disease and it does not make you immune to injury. What it does is support how your nervous system communicates with the rest of your body, help restore movement where it has been lost, and give a system stuck in survival mode a real chance to shift out of it. Many patients find that regular care means fewer flare ups and faster recovery when life does knock them sideways.

It is also not a substitute for medical evaluation. Sudden severe headache, numbness or weakness in a limb, unexplained weight loss, loss of bowel or bladder control, or pain following a car accident are reasons to be seen by a physician first. I will tell you that directly, and I will refer you.

Where to Start

If this landed, the next question is usually a practical one, and it does not start in my office. It starts with the small daily habits that compound over time.

If you would rather understand what ongoing care actually involves before you commit to anything, here is exactly how the phases and visit frequency work, including who genuinely benefits and who does not need it.

And if you are somewhere in Colchester right now recognizing yourself in the "feeling fine" section, that is worth a conversation. You do not have to wait for the laundry basket.
